Review of Joyful Living

Joyful Living by Amy Leigh Mercree

Publisher: Llewellyn Publications

Publication Date: September 8, 2016

When I requested Joyful Living, I was expecting some type of home design/feng shui take on decorating. Instead, it’s a lovely little book of dozens of chapters on how to revitalize and transform your life.

The author, Amy Leigh Mercree, has the motto:

“Live joy. Be kind. Love unconditionally.”

It shows on the pages of Joyful Living.

There are 101 short chapters dealing with subjects such as: “Living in the Present,” “Unwind with Tea and Tub Time,” and, one of my favorites, “Journal Your Joy.” Each chapter begins with an affirmation. “Journal Your Joy” has the following affirmation: “I journal my joy, and my joy expands exponentially forevermore. So be it.” She then goes on to describe how “[k]eeping a journal is therapeutic and creative.” Each chapter ends with an exercise on how to carry out the topic of the chapter and examples to help you do the exercise. Finally, there is a tweetable phrase to share “Sometimes your diary is the perfect listener” #joyfilliving101.

There is something irrepressibly joyful in Mercree’s writing that is contagious.

While this is not a book to devour in one sitting, it is the kind of book that you would pick up, turn to a chapter that is meaningful to you on that given day and try the exercise. It would be the perfect gift for a friend who is a bit lost or in need of a tune-up, or for yourself when you need a pick-me-up or a gentle, joyful, reminder to live mindfully.
