Traveling Soldier
Tonight’s slow.
I am refilling condiments and shakers when a guy with close-cropped sandy hair and hypnotic blue eyes sits in my section.
“What are you having?” I ask.
“Coffee. Breakfast #2. You.”
I glare. He smiles; it’s like a laser cutting through my armor so I laugh instead.
“Not happening.”
“Can you sit?”
I glance around. “I shouldn’t.”
“For a minute? I’m to Nam tomorrow.”
I never do this, but tonight I do. He’s lonely; I feel his nerves echoing.
We meet when I’m off.
In a moment I fall in love.
In a similar moment he’s gone.

I knew this story was familiar. One of my most favourite Dixie Chicks song!
Yes! I was actually going to add the song and video but the only one was from Pearl Harbor (the movie) and I didn’t feel like it fit.
I think you were right about that 🙂
LIfe is a bead-necklace of moments. Lovely
Thank you so much! 🙂
Great story – I hope he makes it back to be with her again. Well done.
Thank you!
Dear Sascha,
Sharp and concise story. Good one.
Shalom,
Rochelle
That must have happened a lot. I sometimes wonder which of the guys I knew in college made it back. Vietnam was terrible. Good writing, Sascha. —- Suzanne
Thank you. I think the world would be a lot more peaceful if we sent politicians to fight wars instead of 18 year olds.
Happy Holidays, Suzanne. Best wishes for the New Year!
