Danger, Deep Water

How times have changed as the signs used to read “don’t dive, shallow water” after Sammy McElroy broke his neck.

The elders say something evil leached into the lake then, something foul, cataclysmic, which created a vortex that swallows the diver and never releases, like a watery coffin, sealed for all eternity.

I scoff, but I sit on the pier watching the calm water for disparity, never realizing that my little sister has been drawn here because of me until she jumps.

  1. Always, always read the signs … A tragedy about to happen and a story all the more powerful because we leave before the horrifying event. Nicely done
