Music possesses the gift of raising our spirits, providing comfort, invoking memories. It lifts us when we’re down, provides a soundtrack to miraculous moments, and sometimes makes us hate a song we used to love, only because now we associate bad things with it.
To you all who have been friends to this blog, you know how much music is a part of me, but there have been times in the past few years that I’ve forgotten just how much it can heal, but this week reminded me.
I have not been a long time fan of the Wailin’ Jennys. It’s probably only been in the past three years that I became aware of their music, but what music it is! These voices blend so beautifully on familiar songs and then you have a new song, one of their own creation that envelops you in its beauty. That’s how I felt about “Apocalypse Lullaby.” It’s both ethereal and grounded, majestic and simple.
Enter world, light unshown
Follow heart, follow home
Here we are, light unshown
One round heart, one round home
I couldn’t find a video of the Wailin’ Jennys performing this song, but there is one with the lyrics and one with the songwriter, Annabelle Chvostek, a former member of the Wailin’ Jennys singing the song by herself, and while I love to hear artists perform their own songs, I miss the harmony in this one. I hope you enjoy.
