Just wait until you read her lovely essay and then you’ll completely understand. And that’s not even to mention the fact that she not only knows who Joss Whedon is, she’s written a book about him.

A Day in the Office
My office mates are rude and unruly. They are also often dirty, smelly and fart so much I sometimes have to wear a scarf around my face, even in summer, because of the smell. They bicker constantly, and I have to get up a 30-times a day to deal with them, which isn’t all bad––at least, I get my steps in. The upside is that they are goofy as heck and make me laugh at least five times a day, often more. They are often privy to conversations no one their age should hear as I’m trying to figure out certain parts of scenes.
Maisie
They, honestly, sleep about 18 hours a day, and they don’t complain when I talk about characters in my head. The truth is I talk to them constantly, and they do pretend to understand––so there’s that. When I was trying out my Irish accent while Liam, the hero in “Bet Me to Stay,” talked in my head, they didn’t laugh.
My husband did. It’s not his fault. I possibly have the worst Irish accent ever.
My office mates are Elvis, Gizmo, and Maisie. The Shih-tzu, Elvis, is the alpha, even though her Great Dane sister, Maisie, outweighs her by a 142 pounds. Gizmo, his origins are questionable at best, is the friendliest dog you’ll ever meet. He’ll beg you to pet him, and then growl as you do. Then he’ll grab your hand and make you pet him while he growls. We call it his language of love.

Elvis is little, but she’s loud. She’s like a Tasmania Devil when she gets riled up, and there’s nothing Maisie likes to do more than test her boundaries. It makes for a house that feels like toddlers are at war a few hours a day. Maisie is the newest employee. Her job is to stop me from taking myself to seriously by bringing me a toy to throw. She’s totally wild and crazy. Two trainers have told us untrainable, but she loves me. Unconditionally. When I’m upset, she comes and puts her head on my arm until I stop whatever I’m doing and hug her.
And Great Danes are great huggers.
But there’s no way humans would ever put up with my behavior. Also, it’s all about unconditional love with these three. They don’t care if I haven’t washed my hair, or if I’m wearing the same yoga pants from two days ago. There’s no judgment in my office. I’m not sure I could say that about anywhere else I’ve worked. Sure, I have to listen to growling and deal with a whole lot of smelly, but I wouldn’t exchange my officemates for anything. They are some of the best writing partners ever.
