Music Monday is a meme started by Drew @ The Tattooed Book Geek. Pick a song you really like and share it.
The first time I heard “If These Walls Could Speak” written by Jimmy Webb (I guarantee that if you don’t know the name Jimmy Webb that at some point in time you’ve heard one of his songs) was on Shawn Colvin’s album of covers aptly called Cover Girl.
Subsequently I learned that one of my favorite performers, Nanci Griffith, had also done a version.
I don’t think I’ve ever done a Nanci Griffith song on Music Monday before, which is a shame. I must do one soon, besides this one. She has a wonderful voice, a musically smart way of phrasing. And, Jimmy Webb, the songwriter, with David Crosby and Graham Nash.
Originally the song was sung by Glen Campbell who performed a lot of Jimmy Webb songs. I’ve probably said before, I love listening to covers. Good covers that good singers make their own. Oh, this reminds me. I read someone thought Amy Grant’s version was the best. I haven’t heard it. Maybe I’ll do that now.
Glen Campbell’s undeniably wonderful voice:
They would tell you that I owe you
More than I could ever pay.
Here’s someone who really loves you;
Don’t ever go away.
That’s what these walls would say.
