Like Hitched (see my review here), the novel that precedes Humbugged in the Happy Cat series, Humbugged also has some plot holes and the beginning chapters, especially those in Noelle’s pov, made my attention drift, frequently, because there was so much “telling” exposition. It took me a very long time to get into the novel and I was setting it side more often than reading it—despite the fact that I adored Clint O’Dell, who, without a doubt, is my favorite O’Dell brother. I blame it on the fact that Noelle never came to life for me, not the way that kookie but lovely Olivia or impetuous Hope did in the previous novels. However, once the plot was sorted out and came to life, I became far more engaged.

Humbugged depends a lot on raunchy humor and its cast of eccentric and very human animals from George Cooney to Nutquacker to Don Juan, a reindeer who shows up out of nowhere.

But there are some heart-warming, steamy, and fun moments that may just be the escape you need from this hectic holiday season or really any time. While I didn’t enjoy as many laugh-out-loud moments as I had in previous novels, I was still entertained.

Humbugged is definitely for readers who are enamored with the Happy Cat series. Others may want to begin with the first in the series, Hosed, so they can keep all of the characters straight.
