Blurb: New York Times bestselling author Sandra Hill returns with love and laughter with the third book in the Bell Sound series.

Welcome to Bell Cove, North Carolina.

The famous bells in this small Outer Banks town are ringing a hero’s welcome when a former army captain returns home…

After being held prisoner for three years in an Afghan prison, Jake Dawson is finally going home–except everyone, including his wife and young sons, believed he was dead. Jake has changed since he left for war, and now he isn’t sure where he belongs.

Sally has changed, too.  Her marriage to Jacob was on shaky ground even before his last deployment, but he’s still every inch the hot, headstrong man she loves, despite his wounds, both visible and invisible. Seeing him with their three boys makes her want to fight for this unexpected second chance.

As summer winds down, all of the wacky folks in Bell Cove, which is awash with yellow ribbons and American flags, are aiming for a Labor Day Love Re-Connection.  In fact, they’re pulling out all the stops, in their usual outrageous style, to get Jake and Sally together again…

A Hero Comes Home by Sandra Hill is the third book in the Bell Sound series and like its predecessors, it’s not only a sexy, steamy romance but a celebration of small towns, good friends, and eccentricities.

Each of the novels in the Bell Sound series have been very different, with characters facing different challenges. In A Hero Comes Home, Jacob Dawson is returning home, against his will, to his wife and three boys after being a tortured POW in the Middle East. His reluctant homecoming is even further marred by the lies and silence he’s forced into.

After having believed her husband dead for three years, Sally is dumbfounded and conflicted to discover that he’s alive and returning home. They didn’t part on the best of terms and her last words to him were angry.

Are they still a couple? Can their marriage work? Or will Jake leave as soon as he has the opportunity?

Hill brings her trademark snark to a sensitive subject and succeeds in evoking all the feels. Like the other novels, she has general observations that are sometimes difficult to know if it’s the character thinking or an omniscient narrator, but, I am starting to get used to this style and even appreciate it.

While I liked both characters of Jake and Sally, I got tired of Sally’s penchant for calling Jake names, most usually “ass” but also moron and the like. Even if he was acting like one, it reduced her character, in my eyes, for her to be referring to him that way so often. Despite this, I appreciated her strength-of-character to be holding on and making a life and bringing up three energetic little boys.

I had a lot of sympathy for Jake’s character. I think Hill did very well in bringing him to life, understanding what horrors he’d seen and how they affected him.

The pacing in the middle slowed a little and then the ending seemed to be rushed, which I found disconcerting. The epilogue was endearing.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

“You do want to come home, don’t you, Jacob?” Sally whispered into the phone.

“Yes. No. I don’t know,” he replied.

The flutters in her chest turned to stone and dropped to her stomach. He had to have heard her gasp.

“Wait. Don’t hang up,” he said quickly. “I’m not the same, Sally.”

“Well, hells bells, neither am I. But forget about you and me. What about your kids. Don’t you want to see them?”

“Of course I do, but . . .” He paused. “I don’t want them to see me like this.”

All of this was so unlike the Jake she knew, and had loved at one time.

“I’m no hero,” he said.

The tears she’d been holding back all day finally let loose in a torrent. She was about to say, I do still love you. But the words wouldn’t come . . .
