Until recently, the US has never been flush with female mystery writers. Ireland and the UK were the places to find good mysteries written by women. In the 1970s, Mary Higgins Clark came on the scene with A Stranger Is Watching, and the tide changed.
Like most writers, she had her fair share of rejections, but unlike most writers she became a major success because she persevered.
Mary Higgins Clark wrote over 40 thriller novels as well as short stories and children’s books. She died yesterday at the age of 92.
