Jus Accardo’s new novel, Transcendent, from Entangled Teen was recently released. It’s the fourth book in her Denazen series. I’m so excited that she joins us today to answer the question of whether she’s a planner or a pantser.
Pantster’s Paradise
I’m a Pantster—meaning I generally write with no net. I start with an idea and move on from that. In the case of the Denazen series, it was a single scene that came to me as I waited on the Dunkin Donuts Drive through line. A person running barefoot through the woods, the grass beneath them shriveling and dying as they went.
From that single scene in my head, the book was born. I sat down the next day and started writing with nothing more than a vague idea and two characters vaguely formed in my head.
In a way, I envy people who plot. I just can’t do it—and its not from lack of trying. I’ve attempted to outline entire books on multiple occasions. All it seems to do is trip me up. I’ve taken plotting workshops and listened to advice from the greats and I still can’t manage it.
But that’s okay. It works for me. What works for me, might not work for another author. That’s the beautiful thing about being a writer. Just like our books, our voices, the way we tell our stories are different, so is our process. I don’t believe any two writer’s work exactly alike. Sure, there are similar paths, but everyone has their own procedure.
