The Puppy’s First Beach Visit #dVerse #poem

dVerse has returned from vacation and I am so happy! Thank you to Brian Miller for providing this prompt.

The Puppy’s First Beach Visit

She is lightning.
little legs zip up the beach
sand jettisoning
her red tongue lolls
her eyes shine.
She challenges the ocean
barks at the noise
stands steadfast
tail beating.

I put my toes in the cold water
so does she. She laughs,
not a sound, but her eyes.
This is the best moment--
she giggles.
She throws herself into the waves,
dances with jubilance
shakes her coat
wants to wave jump again and again
but sunlight dims, home calls.
In the small hours her legs dance
as she wave jumps again and again
in her dreams.

  1. ha. gotta love those little moments of discovery, both with a pups and our own little ones. i remember the first time our cat saw snow. Lol. Now that was a moment. Thanks for the glimpse into a peaceful playful moment by the see.

love their defiance in thinking they can bark back the waves.

  2. I hope this comment gets through (3rd try) Joie de vivre if ever there was! and it’s contagious! I love the fact that each has their own beach towel <3 <3

    1. Thank you! 💖 Yes, they were beach bums in every sense of the word. They loved the beach. And, while they were spoiled, they usually just took over the sun chaises when their humans left. 🙂

      1. You are very welcome, Sascha. I understand the parties while the humans are away. Gary Larson and Youtube expose’s are proof 🙂

  3. Awwwwww, i loved this so much. Then saw your note with her dates after. Lovely to picture her joy. How you must miss her. I know, for i miss a big black wolf i lived with for 14 years. Sigh. They bring such joy.

    1. Thank you, Sherry. There was a point where writing that poem would have had me sobbing more than smiling, but it was good to have that memory of her and good to smile about it. I miss her with all the world but was lucky we had so many, many good times together. And you’re right. They bring immeasurably joy.

  4. A delightful dog moment well captured, Sascha! I love the thought of those little legs zipping up the beach, the way she ‘She challenges the ocean / barks at the noise / stands steadfast / tail beating’, and the dog giggles! I’ve been thinking about getting another dog recently and your poem has increased the longing.
