This year marked the 25th anniversary of Alanis Morrisette’s groundbreaking album Jagged Little Pill. Even as I write these words, I can hear the intro to “Hand in My Pocket,” how stark the sounds, how amazing, even if we’re all still wondering, just what does Ironic mean? But the anthem of vitriol goes to “You Oughta Know.” Did you ever dance to it in your apartment? Sing to it at the top of your lungs when no one was around? Oh, just me? 😉
“You Oughta Know” was the first single from Jagged Little Pill and, for those of you who love little music facts, Dave Navarro (Jane’s Addiction/Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) played lead guitar and bass, respectively.
Seething, angry, vengeful, brave. Gotta love it.
‘Cause the joke that you laid in the bed
That was me and I’m not gonna fade
As soon as you close your eyes, and you know it
And every time I scratch my nails
Down someone else’s back I hope you feel it
Well, can you feel it?
Songwriters: Glen Ballard / Alanis Nadine Morissette
I think it still sounds fresh, relevant. What do you think?
I love this album as much today as I did when it came out. It sounds even better to me now that I’m “grown up” and can understand the lyrics. The album starts on a high note, and it’s a wild ride all the way to the end. It’s hard to not sing out loud while listening. xoxo
It is! I still bellow it, much to the consternation of my dog. I’m surprised hasn’t started howling yet. Keep singing! ❤
I love Alanis’ songs, because my mom used to sing it in karaoke when I was young! And now, me and my siblings sing it too. Hahaha. It’s so good to listen to, because it can get a bit nostalgic. Thanks for sharing this! xo
That’s great. And, somehow makes me feel really old…lol. I’m so glad you found her music though.
Aww the memories!
