What drew Chris Cannon to dragons?
There are several reasons why I write dragons. I first fell in love with fantasy and dragons by reading the DragonLance series by Weis and Hickman. There was never enough information about the dragons.
Fast forward to the explosion in YA books featuring shifters and I knew I wanted to create a world with shape-shifters where males and females were equal in strength and magical power. As a five-foot-two female I have spent my entire life asking people to help me move heavy objects like bookcases and desks. It’s super annoying that I can’t do those things on my own. (And a short female in better shape may be able to move heavy objects but that’s not me.)
I also wanted to write about shifters that could fly. Whenever I’m really happy, I have dreams where I can fly. I think it would be the most amazing, freeing sensation in the world. Dragons always seem so wild and free. Wanting to create a strong shifter that could fly and have cool magical powers lead me to shape-shifting dragons.
I loved the idea of different Dragon Clans with different powers. In my world Reds breathe fire. Greens breathe wind. Blue breathe ice. Black dragons breathe lightning, and Orange dragons blast sonic waves.
I’ve grown to love my dragons. Writing a star-crossed love story featuring the parents of Bryn from the Going Down in Flames series was like visiting friends I hadn’t seen in a while. Star-Crossed Dragons is a paranormal romance, while the Going Down In Flames series is more of an adventure series with romantic elements. I’m hoping Star-Crossed Dragons will appeal to romance readers and lovers of paranormal because…who doesn’t love dragons?

Blurb: Ice-princess, Sara Sinclair, is the most un-Blue Blue Dragon of her Clan. And now her parents signed a marriage contract to an absolute asshat. Sara has no interest in being one half of a snobby Blue power couple. In fact, all she can dream about is biting her obnoxious fiancé’s head off and burying him in the garden. Since that can’t happen, her future seems like a lost cause, until she meets Ian, a fire-breathing Red Dragon—who is everything her fiancé is not.
Now Sara’s jumped from the frying pan into the fire because dating outside of your Clan is against Directorate law. Ian could be thrown in jail or executed without a trial. But now that she knows what love feels like, she can’t imagine being with anyone else.
Talk about a rock and a hard place…
