My radio station goes through periods of repeating songs so much so that I wondered if something that sounded old to me had actually been updated–a song from the mid-90s, which had not. Recently they’ve gotten stuck on “Doin’ Time” by Lana Del Rey, which came out in May of 2019 and is a cover of a Sublime song by the same name. Her version is Lana Del Rey-sultry and sophisticated, looking back on a time when a voice made a song. Both videos (Del Rey’s and Sublime’s) are below.
Oh take this veil from off my eyes
My burning sun will some day rise
So what am I gonna be doin’ for a while?
Said I’m gonna play with myself
Show them now we’ve come off the shelf
So what?
