Oh, I’m not going to lie. There were teeth pulled to extract this story from my being. Painful.
Anyway, I made it through Day 1, letter A. For today, I chose Maggie Roger’s song Alaska in which a woman is walking off her old romance or “him.” I am toying with these flash fictions being entwined as I have in the previous two years. We’ll see. At this stage, it might just be enough to commit to putting words to paper…or computer. 😉

Just Friends
Fifteen thousand steps and a kicked can, that’s what it took to get him out of my system. To be fair, I kicked that can a lot.
Tom sits on the front porch, doing arpeggios on his Gibson while his dark eyes gaze intently at me. “Are you done now?”
I’ve got to give him credit. No “I told you so’s” have left his lips.
“Yeah,” I say and then plop down on the top step, stare out at the road and, yes, feel immensely better.
He starts playing a tune that I am slow to recognize. When I do, I turn and grin at him.
“These Boots Are Made for Walking?”
“You deserve better than him.”
I reach over and squeeze his ankle. “You’re the very best best friend.”
Something flickers in his eyes before he nods. “I am.”
He stands, ruffles my hair with his palm before going inside. I hear his sing, “You don’t know the one who dreams of you at night.” My heart skitters like the clouds scudding across the sky. I shake my head at the fanciful notion that Tom might feel something for me. We are and will always be just friends.

And I walked off you
Doug Schadt & Maggie Rogers
And I walked off an old me
Oh me, oh my, I thought it was a dream
So it seemed
Oh, my dear. I’m afraid Tom will be crushed when he reads the ending. Great write!
😊 or her words are just to convince herself.
Aha!
I think she’s oh so wrong about Tom. Loved it 😀
Thank you so much! 🙂
Can’t see what’s right in front of you. I never heard of Maggie Rogers. Where do you find these artists? I am really out of the loop.
I listen to a station that plays a lot of variety and then I stream songs I like, which introduces me to new artists. But I am always stunned to find out that someone has been recording great music for the past 20 years and I’ve never heard of them! 😀
She will realize it. Hopefully before it’s too late.
Yes, hopefully not too late! Thanks so much! 🙂
