Music Monday: Feels Like Home by Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris & Linda Ronstadt

Do you ever go on Twitter, see someone is trending, and think: oh, no! Linda Ronstadt was trending on Saturday on what was her 77th birthday. As someone who practically grew up with her music, it’s hard to believe she’s 77 but then, you know, it’s hard for me to believe that I’m the age that I am! (How did that happen again?!)

Anyway, I am late for Music Monday so we’ll call it Tuesday Tune and celebrate Linda Ronstadt’s beautiful, amazing voice.

One thing that we music lovers took for granted prior to the 2000s was unadulterated voices–singers with perfect pitch and control who didn’t need engineering to sound great. You can hear the control Ronstadt has over her voice, hitting the high notes without belting, belting when the melody calls for it, and singing warm when the lyrics beg for it. She’s not autotuned; I probably shouldn’t need to mention that but will. As one of my YouTube favorites, Rick Beato, would say: this is a real song being sung by a real person.

I have a lot of favorite Linda Ronstadt songs but Feels Like Home came up on the radio the other day and I’d never heard it before. Thinking it must be new with a singer who sounded a lot like Linda Ronstadt, I discovered that it was indeed Rondstadt with Dolly Parton and Emmylou when they were recording their Trio II songs. It was written by Randy Newman and I think it’s just lovely. Tell me what you think.

A window breaks
Down a long dark street
And a siren wails in the night

That’s alright
‘Cause I have you here with me
And I can almost see
Through the dark there’s a light

Songwriters: Randy Newman

    1. She recorded so much music, thankfully, that I’m sure I’ll hear other songs that I don’t know. I am glad that she did when she could still sing. On a side note, I can’t imagine having her voice and never being able to sing again.
