Love Unexpectedly #3

By: Lauren Layne

Releasing February 14, 2017
Loveswept

Blurb
Over the course of one wild road trip, feuding childhood sweethearts get a second chance at love in this charming rom-com—a standalone novel from the USA Today bestselling author of
Blurred Lines and Good Girl.

When Lucy Hawkins receives a job offer in San Francisco, she can’t wait to spread her wings and leave her small Virginia hometown behind. Her close-knit family supports her as best they can, by handing over the keys to a station wagon that’s seen better days. The catch? The cross-country trip comes with a traveling companion: her older brother’s best friend, aka the guy who took Lucy’s virginity hours before breaking her heart.

After spending the past four years and every last dime caring for his sick father, Reece Sullivan will do just about anything to break free of the painful memories—even if it means a two-week road trip with the one girl who’s ever made it past his carefully guarded exterior. But after long days of bickering in the car turn into steamy nights in secluded motel rooms, Reece learns that, when it comes to Lucy, their story is far from over. And this time, they just might have a shot at a happy ending.

Although listed as a title in the Love Unexpectedly Series, all books in the series stand alone.

Someone Like You by Lauren Layne

Publisher: Loveswept

Publication Date: December 6, 2016

True confession time: I stopped reading romance novels a few years back unless they were paranormal or suspense or comedic because it had begun to feel like I was reading the same novel over and over again. Since I started book blogging, I have picked up several. Some have been of that previous ilk, but some have just knocked the notion of a “typical” romance novel right off of its foundation. Someone Like You is one of the latter and has had me asking how it is that I have only now just discovered Lauren Layne?

Daisy Sinclair is in New York to celebrate her twin sister’s marriage and has been warned to stay away from the best man, Lincoln Mathis, because he’s a player. Lincoln has been warned to stay away from Daisy because, well, he’s a player, and there would be hell to pay if he hurt Daisy. But the instant that Daisy and Lincoln see each other, it’s not love at first sight. It’s something else, something far deeper. They see like souls and they have an immediate connection that goes far beyond immediate attraction.

There is something about the tone of Someone Like You that makes it feel a bit more like a chick lit novel with a focus on relationships of all kinds and deeper, I hesitate to say, values, because that just goes off into another territory. The introspection makes it feel far more mature. But, there is also a playfulness that rounds out the seriousness very well. The dialogue between Daisy and Lincoln is smart and funny.

Both the characters of Daisy and Lincoln move beyond the typical mainstays of romance novels. They seem like real people. There are several instances in which a situation would have incited an overreaction in the typical romance heroine, but Daisy handles it with empathy and maturity and aplomb. Likewise, Lincoln is vulnerable and perceptive and just really, really (can I add another “really” without going over the top?) appealing. He is so perceptive and in touch with himself and others. Ideal comes to mind.

Whitney, Daisy’s divorcee best friend, could have been a funny stereotype, but here again Layne created a character with depth. Whitney is the best friend we all dream of having. She is funny and sexy but knows when to tone it down, especially for her beloved friend.

There is just a tremendous amount to like about this novel and that is without having read the previous ones in the series.

So, I’m off to write a note to Santa to ask for some Lauren Layne novels for Christmas. Oh, Santa please! Especially if the men are like Lincoln! And, pffft, yes, I pretty much thought Daisy was cooler than all get out too.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Review of Dream Maker

Dream Maker by Erin McCarthy

Publisher: Loveswept

Publication Date: October 18, 2016

Woot! We got us a country music novel!!!

Avery has just arrived in Nashville from a small Kentucky town with the hopes of making it as a songwriter when she discovers that the man she’s been involved with forever and presumed she would marry has been cheating on her. So she gets angry and tells him to drop her off, but then she forgets her purse in his car. Shane, a music producer, has just left party when he sees Avery angry and yelling and standing in the middle of the road. He rescues her. But what seems like Shane rescuing Avery might just be the other way around.

It’s novels like Dream Maker that make me do a little happy dance and it’s not just because they center around one of my favorite topics, music. No, it’s because it’s fresh and the heroine, Avery, is strong and sassy and no one puts her in the corner and if they tried she’d kick their butt. She doesn’t need anyone to fight her fights for her. She has a very strong sense of purpose and of integrity, which is why when she sees that Shane is the brother of one of her favorite singers she leaves and doesn’t try to get in contact.

Likewise, Avery is the kind of woman that makes a ladies’ man like Shane think twice about continuing to play the field, except that his dad was not the greatest role model and he’s afraid of turning out like him.

When Avery and Shane reconnect, there’s still some fireworks, but Shane is like a bulldozer who wants Avery regardless of the cost—to her. I guess that’s the beginning of where Dream Maker powered down just a tad for me and Shane lost some of his initial likeability that seemed to stem from his sensitivity. However, McCarthy  brought the novel back online and Dream Maker had a satisfactory conclusion.

I enjoyed this first taste of the Nashville Nights series and will certainly seek out the first.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I Wish You Were Mine
Oxford #2

By: Lauren Layne

Released February 2, 2016
Loveswept

RomancePerfect for fans of Alice Clayton and Emma Chase, Lauren Layne’s Oxford series heats up in this story of forbidden desire as a brooding jock hoping for a comeback falls for a woman who’s strictly off-limits.

A year ago, Jackson Burke was married to the love of his life and playing quarterback for the Texas Redhawks. Now he’s retired, courtesy of the car accident that ruined his career—and single, after a nasty scandal torpedoed his marriage. Just as he’s starting to get used to his new life as a health and fitness columnist for Oxford magazine, his unpredictable ex shows up on his doorstep in Manhattan. Jackson should be thrilled. But he can’t stop thinking about the one person who’s always been there for him, the one girl he could never have: her younger sister.

Mollie Carrington can’t say no to Madison. After all, her older sister practically raised her. So when Madison begs for help in winning her ex-husband back, Mollie’s just glad she got over her own crush on Jackson ages ago—or so she thought. Because as Mollie reconnects with Jackson, she quickly forgets all her reasons to stay loyal to her sister. Tempted by Jackson’s mellow drawl and cowboy good looks, Mollie is sick and tired of coming in second place. But she can’t win if she doesn’t play the game.

“I thought I might find you out here,” he said quietly as he took a sip of his own champagne.

Mollie snuck a look out of the corner of her eye. He’d come looking for her? She hadn’t thought anyone had noticed she’d slipped away.

“I messed up the toast,” she said quietly.

“Nah,” he said, stretching his long legs out in front of him and slouching down a bit to get comfortable. “Just think how many people you educated on the mating ritual of parasitic worms. They should be thanking you.”

Mollie groaned. “It was supposed to be romantic. I did a paper about them for my systematics and biotics diversity final. They’re unusual because they’re bonded for life. Most organisms sleep around or, you know, the male dies after mating—”

Jackson winced, and Mollie wished she could wither and die just like a male bee.

Mollie knew she had lots of useless trivia in her head, but she didn’t normally go spouting it out like this. Not that she was a smooth talker or anything, but she was usually pretty quiet and normal, if a bit nerdy.

But tonight she felt . . . off. Starting with the fact that the dress Madison had picked for her was the exact color of Mollie’s complexion, so she looked like a mole rat. And then there was the fact that she’d tripped a bit as she’d been going down the aisle, courtesy of the five-inch stilettos her sister had insisted on.

Add in an awkward maid-of-honor speech where she’d gone on for a good five minutes about Schistosoma mansoni worms and how they mated for life, just like the bride and groom, and . . . oh God. Why had nobody stopped her?

Mollie scrunched down on the bench with a moan as she took a sip of champagne. “Madison’s going to kill me.”

Madison was in a mood anyway. She’d been a bridezilla from the moment Jackson had put a ring on it, but Mollie had figured when the actual day came around, her sister would relax.

Nope.

She’d been pissed about the flowers being ivory instead of true white to match her dress. Had bitched about the fact that Lily, one of her bridesmaids, had styled her hair in a way that was too close to the bride’s style.

Then Madison had vented about how the bracelet Jackson’s mother had shyly presented as Maddie’s “something old” was dumpy.

That one had gotten under Mollie’s skin. Mrs. Burke was the closest thing to a mother that either of them had. Their own mother had died of an overdose years ago, and Mollie would have given a kidney to have a surrogate as lovely and kind as Jackson’s mom.

“Maddie won’t kill you,” Jackson said, putting an arm around the back of the park bench and smiling down at her. “She loves you, even if she doesn’t get your whole triple-major, science-camp vibe.”

Mollie withheld a snort. That was an understatement. She loved her sister, but the closest Madison ever got to science was her monthly chemical peel.

Still, Mollie felt a fierce need to make sure that Jackson Burke knew she was an adult. “I’m twenty. I do not go to science camp.”

He lifted an eyebrow, and Mollie pointed her champagne flute at him. “Okay, I used to go to science camp. But I’m not the one who used the word ‘lactation’ in relation to a mermaid.”

“Hey, you’re not the only one who took bio in college.”

“But you were a communications major. Journalism,” she said.

He gave her a surprised look, and Mollie looked away, mentally kicking herself. That was exactly what Jackson Burke didn’t need—another groupie stalker.

She snuck another glance and saw that he’d slumped even farther, matching her own crappy posture, and Mollie was surprised to see that he looked . . . exhausted.

“Are you okay?” she asked. Because she couldn’t not ask. Not after she’d seen the weariness around his eyes, the slight tension in his shoulders.

Jackson turned his head so their eyes locked and he frowned before returning his attention to the mermaid. “Nobody ever asks me that.”

Her heart squeezed at the lost note in his voice. It was strange to think of someone as big and important as Jackson Burke being lonely, but somehow . . . somehow she knew he was. Even here, among all these people, he was somehow alone. Apart.

Like her.

Review of Welcome Home for Christmas, Tour and Giveaway!

Welcome Home for Christmas by Annie Rains

Publisher: Loveswept

Publication Date: November 8, 2016

I use the word “sweet” a lot of times in reviewing some romance books. Sweet can mean a lot of things though depending on the type of book. Sometimes it’s treacly and super sweet and you can feel that weird coating on your teeth. Sometimes it’s warmly yummy like a home-baked favorite dessert, not too sweet, and so, so yummy.

Welcome Home for Christmas is of the warmyly yummy category of sweetness. It is just the type of romance to read instead of watching one of those Lifetime Christmas movies because the characters are definitely more fulfilling.

Allison Carmichael has had some bad luck choosing men so she’s happy to remain single except for on Christmas Eve when her family celebrates and she’s made to feel like there’s something wrong with her because she’s alone. Troy Matthews would happily forego Christmas all together and that’s what he intends to do since his brother made last year’s festivities a trainwreck. But somehow he gets roped into volunteering his time to help out orphans and ends up on an auction block. Allison at the last minute decides to bid on Troy so that she could have a date for the Christmas Eve party.

After Allison has “won” Troy, they decide to spend time together so that they can learn about each other. Allison’s mother is smart and not likely to be fooled. On the few short dates, Allison and Troy begin to fall in love with each other. It’s endearing and believable.

Yes, we’ve seen it and we’ve read it before. The man on auction. Don’t toss this one aside just because the premise has been visited many times before. I promise you that this one is to read when you just want something nice and romantic and fun. But, it’s so well-written with characters you can believe in, which is such a nice change of pace, sincerely!

Yes, there’s some sexy in it. Troy is yummy and Allison is kind and they work in the way that lots of admirable real-life couples do. There’s funny and there’s embarrassment (oops, is that a sparkly vibrator?!) and there’s introspection and there’s an added little mystery. It’s really just a great blend that makes me hope that the other novels in the series are as good as this one.

Why don’t they make books like this into Lifetime or Hallmark Christmas movies? It really has everything you could want. Just sayin’.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

WELCOME HOME FOR CHRISTMAS
A Hero’s Welcome #4
Annie Rains
Releasing Nov 8th, 2016

The bestselling Hero’s Welcome series continues with a juicy Christmas romance set in Seaside, North Carolina, where a bustling military base keeps this small town stocked with dedicated, lovable heroes.

Three-hundred-and-sixty-four days a year, Allison Carmichael doesn’t mind being single. It sure beats dating another loser, and it keeps her heart safe. Then there’s that three-hundred-and-sixty-fifth day: Christmas Eve, the traditional time her entire family gathers together—and gangs up on her, demanding to know when she’s going to get married. This year, she swears, is going be different. And that’s why, at a charity auction she’s throwing on-base, she buys herself a man.

Sergeant Troy Matthews insists that he’s not for sale. His time is, though, and he’s happy
to donate it. Happier still when he learns the identity of the winning bidder: the redhead with the killer good looks and smart mouth who runs the veteran’s center. Allison needs Troy’s help to fool her family into believing they’re an item, and he’s all too happy to indulge her. But by the time Christmas Eve rolls around, their little charade is working a little too well . . . because Troy’s falling head over heels.

Daisy took another sip of her wine, watching as wedding guests took their places on the dance floor, warding off her boredom by trying to guess how long each couple had been together based on body language.

She was a little amused to see that Emma and all of her Stiletto friends still seemed to be in the handsy honeymoon stage with their significant others, even though she knew they’d mostly been with their respective spouses for years.

Daisy felt a little twist of her heart. Once upon a time, she’d thought that’d be her and Gary. As much in love on someone else’s wedding day as they had been on their own. At least she’d been in love on that day. She wasn’t sure someone like Gary knew what love was.

Still, she was glad to be here. Glad to be surrounded by all of this happiness, even if it was bittersweet. Daisy wished her father could be here to see this. He’d died of a heart attack a year ago, and though their dad had wreaked plenty of havoc on Emma and Cassidy’s relationship all those years ago, Daisy wished he could have walked Emma down the aisle and had a chance at the father-daughter dance.

The way it had worked out was rather lovely, though. Cole Sharpe, yet another Oxford writer, had walked Emma down the aisle, and a whole slew of the Oxford guys had twirled a laughing Emma around the dance floor in place of the father-daughter dance.

It struck Daisy that this was Emma’s family. Sure, the twins were close, but they were orphans now, and they’d never been particularly close to the rest of their extended family. So Emma had built a family here in New York, with a network of tight-knit friendships.

And though Daisy was happy for Emma she was also . . . jealous.

“I hate to break it to you, pet, but you’re pulling off the wallflower routine a little too convincingly over here.”

Daisy turned, somehow unsurprised to see Lincoln Mathis standing beside her, blue eyes twinkling above the pink bow tie that he pulled off with impressive masculinity.

“You cheated,” she said, by way of greeting.

He smiled, slow and flirty, as he rested one shoulder against the wall she was leaning on, looking down at her. “How’s that?”

“You made them laugh and cry in your speech. I thought we agreed that you were just going to be the funny guy.”

He smiled wider. “What can I say, I’m alluring in a multitude of ways.”

“Speaking of,” she said, nodding her chin slightly to the sultry brunette making her way towards them, “I believe your previous dance partner is wanting an encore.”

He let out the subtlest of groans, so quiet she thought she might have imagined it.

“Dance with me,” he said suddenly to Daisy, straightening and looking down at her.

She jolted in surprise, then in panic. “I can’t.”

He smiled and held out a hand. “Come on now, Wallflower. I’m very good at dancing.”

Wallflower. Daisy had never been a wallflower in her life. Although he had a point. She did seem to be lurking in the corner a bit. She silently scolded herself. This was everything she’d been coaching herself not to do. Not to let Gary win . . .

“I don’t doubt your dancing prowess,” she replied saucily, “but—”

She broke off. What could she possibly say? I don’t like being touched?

It’s not that she couldn’t be touched. She wasn’t that broken. She didn’t freak out. She’d endured Cassidy’s hug when she’d greeted him last night; she’d danced earlier with her uncle. But those men were family.

Lincoln Mathis was . . . not family.

Dance with him, she commanded herself. Don’t be that broken woman Gary tried to make you.

She didn’t move, and slowly Lincoln’s hand dropped to his side, just as the brunette reached them.

“I love this song,” the woman said, running a possessive hand up Lincoln’s arm. “Dance?”

Lincoln held Daisy’s gaze and she shrugged before blowing him a teasing good-bye kiss. “Bye bye.”

His eyes narrowed. “Actually,” Lincoln said, turning and giving the other woman a regretful smile, “I need to step out for a moment.”

The woman’s perfectly shaped brows folded into a frown. “Step out? For what?”

“I need to show Daisy something,” he said, bending and kissing the other woman’s cheek. “Next time, love.”

Before Daisy could register that she’d been commandeered as part of Lincoln Mathis’s escape, he’d plucked the champagne flute out of her hand, setting it aside before clasping her fingers in his and pulling her toward the door.

“Wait, we’re really leaving?” she asked with a laugh as he tugged her through the throng of wedding guests.

“Yep.”

“I can’t,” she said. “It’s my sister’s wedding, I have family here, and . . .”

“But you want to leave,” he said, turning and facing her.

She narrowed her gaze. “Why would I want that?”

He met her eyes. “Because you don’t like weddings any more than I do.”
